FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE is out.. unofficially

Yesterday the code for FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE was finished, we wont see an official announcement on this until all the ISOs and binaries and build and FTP servers updated. But, FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE is out, and you can upgrade to it right now if you don’t mind building from source. See the commits that create FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE and FreeBSD 9-STABLE here http://freshbsd.org/commit/freebsd/r229283 and here http://freshbsd.org/commit/freebsd/r229318. Thanks to this thread for the heads up http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=28511

To check out the source via svn and upgrade to FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE you can do the following

# mv /usr/src /usr/src.old
# svn co svn://svn.freebsd.org/base/release/9.0.0 /usr/src

To build the source

# mergemaster -p
# cd /usr/src
# make buildworld
# make buildkernel
# make installkernel
# reboot
# cd /usr/src
# make installworld
# mergemaster -iU
# reboot

If you don’t want to build it yourself wait a few more days and you will be able to update using freebsd-update

# freebsd-update upgrade -r 9.0-RELEASE
# freebsd-update install
# shutdown -r now
# freebsd-update install

If you are running FreeBSD 8.x or older before this update, you will need to now rebuild all your ports/packages as prompted and then run the install command again

# freebsd-update install

Now reboot into FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE, happy 2012!
