bsdinstall – FreeBSD 9.0 installer video demo!

With FreeBSD 9.0 comes a new installer, bsdinstall, so no more (nasty?) sysinstall. Some love the new one some wonder if it’s really an improvement. A replacement for sysinstall has been a long time coming, and although bsdinstall has still got a bit to go, maybe needs a bit of a polish, I think it’s better. Here’s a quick demo of the new installer from FreeBSD 9RC2.

What do you think, is it better?

Not yet, that is part of the plan though. For a complete ZFS installer for FreeBSD you should try PC-BSD, it has a full X GUI installer with an option for a full ZFS system. When installing make sure you select to install the FreeBSD distro not PC-BSD.

[..YouTube..] You can install a full zfs system with bsdinstall if you don’t mind setting up the zpool manually. Other than that it’s all bsdinstall, just posted a video response showing how to, there is also a blog post to come.

I really loved sysinstall back in the day. It was easy to navigate, and it was convenient to be able to do the steps out of order. I haven’t used FreeBSD on a daily basis in years, and the last couple of installs I did with bsdinstall just seemed counterintuitive. I’m about to give it another chance though!
